Water Distribution System Flushing

The EAWA water distribution system consists of approximately 27 miles of underground pipe. As part of our annual maintenance for this system, EAWA flushes its water system on scheduled basis. The flushing removes sediment that builds up in the water lines, maintains the integrity of the water system and provides customers with the highest-quality of water.

During the flushing process, customers may experience the following:

  • Water service may be interrupted;
  • Temporary water discoloration may occur but does not affect the water quality.  If water is discolored, clear the pipes in your home by running all the water faucets for several minutes until the water runs clear;
  • Before using the washing machine or dishwasher, check for discolored water.  If the water is discolored, wait until the tap water is clear before using.  If laundry becomes stained form the discolored water, re-wash the clothes right away;
  • Reduced or no water pressure.  Check the faucet screens for any trapped particles.

Following the same principle of water line flushing, it is recommended that every household drain and flush the water heater on a regular basis, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, to remove sediment, operate efficiently and maintain water quality inside the home.
